I’m Desperate to Lose Weight, but I’m Afraid of Surgery

Bariatric surgery gets a lot of attention these days because of its ability to provide safe and effective results, especially when you lose a lot of weight. However, that doesn’t mean it’s your only option, even if nothing seems to have helped in the past.

As a bariatric surgeon, Dr. Chad Carlton sees firsthand the challenges of losing weight. He also knows that the best weight loss solution for one person may not be ideal for another. That’s why Dr. Carlton offers numerous weight-loss strategies at LoneStar Bariatrics in Plano, Texas — so you can finally lose those pounds you’ve been desperate to shed, even if surgery isn’t an option.

Ready to lose weight, no surgery required? Here are ways Dr. Carlton can help at LoneStar Bariatrics.

Nutritional counseling

Whether you undergo bariatric surgery or not, a key aspect of long-term weight management success involves proper nutrition.

Our registered dietician, Allison Rezentes, MS, RD/LD, demystifies healthy eating, so you can clearly understand your diet and how food impacts your overall health. With her guidance, you can develop a clear action plan that outlines the steps you need to take to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

And you can rest easy knowing that it will be one you want to maintain for the rest of your life.

Medical weight-loss management

Knowing what to eat is the first step for weight loss, but sometimes a person needs a little extra help. In these cases, medical weight-loss management can give you the additional support you need.

These programs combine nutritional counseling, medical supervision, and prescription medications like Lomaira™ and Contrave®. These drugs increase feelings of fullness, decrease appetite, or a combination of both.

When used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise, medication offers additional weight loss results of 3-7% of a person’s total body weight. These numbers aren’t as dramatic as the 47% people lose with gastric sleeve or the 55% seen with gastric bypass. However, 5-10% sustained weight loss can offer significant health benefits, like lower blood sugar, blood pressure, and triglycerides.

Gastric balloons

Another nonsurgical weight-loss solution that can yield impressive results involves gastric balloons.

Dr. Carlton relies on the Orbera® and Obalon® systems, which work as you might expect — by placing a “balloon” in your stomach, so you feel fuller faster when you eat. Dr. Carlton inserts a thin tube down your throat to reach your stomach and then passes an empty balloon inside. Once in place, he fills it with saline to reduce the empty space in your stomach.

It only takes about 30 minutes to have a gastric balloon placed, and it usually remains in your stomach for about six months. After that point, Dr. Carlton either removes the balloon or replaces it with a new one.

When you have a gastric balloon, you still work closely with Allison Rezentes so she can ensure you learn the lifestyle habits you need to lose weight and maintain your results indefinitely. In most cases, people lose 7-15% of their body weight during the first 6 months of gastric balloon treatment, with total weight loss ranging from 30-47%.

At the end of the day, you’re not alone when it comes to choosing the best weight loss solution. Dr. Carlton can explain all of your options, including bariatric surgery, one of the safest surgeries people undergo. The most important thing is choosing an approach that feels right to you so you can reach your goals and maintain the results for a lifetime.
