At LoneStar Bariatrics in Frisco, TX, we are dedicated to providing our patients with a wide range of bariatric surgery options, so they can decide on a course of treatment that is right for their unique body and situation. Our surgeons have experience in an array of surgical procedures for weight loss that can help our patients lose a meaningful amount of weight and spend the rest of their lives feeling better and healthier.
A biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, sometimes shortened simply as BPD/DS is a two-part procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and also bypasses a large portion of the patient’s small intestine. One of the benefits of BPD/DS surgery is that, although it reduces the amount of food a person can consume much like other bariatric procedures, the effect of this surgery lessens over time. This means that patients who undergo a duodenal switch surgery can eventually consume almost “normal” amounts of food, while a significant portion of the small bowl is bypassed by the food stream.
Because of the bypass portion of the procedure, food that is consumed is not mixed with pancreatic enzymes until further down the small intestine. This means that there is a decrease in the absorption of nutrients and calories. Similarly to a bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy, BPD/DS impacts the gut hormones that are involved with feelings of satiety, hunger, and even blood sugar control. BPD/DS is considered by surgeons to be the most effective bariatric surgery for patients with diabetes.
Patients who undergo BPD/DS are required to adhere to strict dietary recommendations as well as a lifelong supplementation regimen and continued follow-ups. Most patients will be required to stay in the hospital overnight following their procedure, but can expect to lose up to 60-70% of their excess body weight after their surgery. BPD/DS reduces the absorption of fat by approximately 70%. This procedure combines some of the most successful versions of bariatric surgery into one procedure that can have a lasting, positive impact on your life by allowing you to sustainably lose weight to improve your total-body health.
